Allan Poxon

Board Member

Al is intelligent, structured, collaborative and dedicated.  Al was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was stationed in Governors Island, New York while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, and has resided in Long Island, New York since 1975.  “I was an avid baseball player in High School and was fortunate to receive an athletic scholarship to Point Park College in Pennsylvania.”  Along life’s highway, Al has been interested in science, technology, law and aviation.  He earned his Bachelor of Science in Communications and Journalism from Point Park College, his Paralegal Certification from the American Bar Association, as well as his Commercial Pilot’s License, Instrument and Multi-engine Ratings in 1975 and 1979, respectively. Al never turned his passion for flying into a full-time career, but flying has been one of his steady interests since 1975. “I was trained as an aerial cameraman in high performance aircraft (F-14 Tomcat, A6 Intruder, EA6B, manufactured by Grumman Aerospace Corporation, but most of my flying experience has been flying individuals for pleasure trips and excursions.”

Throughout Al’s vast career he has worked in industries spanning Industrial Film/TV Production, Aerospace Technology, Engineering, and Medical Imaging.  Along the journey he held titles such as Technical Writer, Technical Marketing Specialist, Sales Engineer, Producer, Quality Standards Auditor and Director of Consumer Affairs.  “I love to learn, and I was blessed to have worked with some of the best engineers on the planet.  Their level of precision is fascinating, and I enjoyed learning from them as I gained the information I needed in order to write technologies for high-end users.”  In 2016, Al retired from Quantum Medical Imaging, after working as a Technical Writer for over 8 years.

“I have been a member of First Presbyterian Church of Port Jefferson for over 50 years, and the Board President of Noah’s Ark Day Care approached me about serving on the Board.  I met with the Noah’s Ark Board and felt that my strengths in structure and processes along with my general knowledge of law would benefit the non-profit.  In 2019 I officially joined the Board, and we tightened up the policies, job descriptions and expectations through written documentation.  Venetta Jones, Center Director, is very diligent in her work and she does an excellent job retaining our families so that we serve the child from Infancy through Pre-K.  We are like a diamond in the rough.  Once families discover Noah’s Ark, they love bringing their children here.  Our warm and welcoming environment along with our flexible scheduling policy are two of our key difference makers which set us apart from other Day Cares in the area.”  Covid placed financial strain on the Day Care, but members of the Noah’s Ark Board as well as the congregation of First Presbyterian Church stepped up and provided financial support.  Noah’s Ark has emerged from survival mode.  Their enrollment continues to increase, which places them in a stronger financial position.

Al Poxon loves challenges, and he brings unique perspectives and insights to the Board Meetings when issues, policies and procedures need decided upon.  “I ask a lot of questions, as I have an inquisitive mind and I like to learn in order to offer sound advice and counsel.  I believe in change, when it is necessary.  But I also believe that ‘If it isn’t broke don’t try to fix it!’”  As a Man of God, Al treats others in a humble, courteous, considerate and collaborative manner.  He is both smart and friendly and pulls that together to move things forward with ease. “I enjoy the experiences which life has to offer, and I encourage others to trust in The Lord and to never, never give up!”
